#14 Easter Weekend, Part 1

This weekend, the fireworks will reach their crescendo as everyone is spending Easter with their host families. Instead of our usual two bloggers, we’ve asked everyone to briefly share what they’ve been doing, along with a couple of pictures. So, in no particular order, here we go:



Ashley writes:

Today my host family and I decided to visit some of the castles in Potsdam, near Berlin. We also went out to eat delicious pizza and soup.

 



Sanjay writes:

Today I had some delicious ice cream, and then we went to a castle (Burg Mildenstein) and played an escape room game. Afterwards, we started driving to Prague, and I tried this new drink called Kofola; it has an interesting flavor.

Branden writes:

Today my host family and I traveled to one of their friends homes which happened to be a farm. After meeting everyone I got to visit all the animals like sheep, pigs, guinea pigs, cats, rabbits and their dog. Later we painted eggs together and played Settlers of Catan through the night.


Mariana writes:

Lena and I headed to "Jump House" bright and early (9:30 am) and later visited the village she grew up in. After a hearty meal, we biked 10 kilometers,and met up with the girls (Luana + Sabrina + Suvi + Alma) to paint eggs and eat more food.


Sofia writes:

Today Milena and I enjoyed waking up late and getting some rest. Then we went to church and it was cool seeing the same traditions I have back home here in Germany! We also colored eggs from their neighbors’ chickens and made some delicious chocolate desserts!


Jayden writes:

Today Thalia and I had lunch with her grandparents and dad. We had Königsberger Klöpse and sugar strawberries with ice cream for dessert. Then we went home and watched movies all afternoon!


Martin writes: 

I traveled to Munich where we walked around before we had a formal dinner with the whole family.


Sabrina writes:

Today we started our Easter celebrations by coloring and decorating eggs. Then we got sushi and ended the day with a late movie at the cinema!



Joey writes: 

Today, Maddie, Jaseen, I, and our exchange partners along with Ernst's family all went to the Thomaskirche and then headed out to a tree climbing place.



Luana writes:

Today we decorated eggs for Easter, ate lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant called Pholosopy, and even went to a German movie theater! I had so much fun and other than the movie being in German, it was pretty great! I had never seen an "ice cream man" that comes into the movie theater.

#4 TSCHÜSS BERLIN, HALLO LEIPZIG!

After a record-setting day, we figured our kids might be just a tad less energetic than usual this morning so we kicked off the day an hour later than yesterday. We once again had breakfast at "our" café where the kids ordered (almost) like locals already.  Then we did what we couldn't do yesterday: go to the top of Berlin's TV tower, called Alex because of its location on the Alexanderplatz . We took our time enjoying the view over Berlin from 203 meters (666 ft) high.    After we descended 666ft in just a few seconds, we split up into two groups: One group wanted to go shopping by detour of the  Berliner Dom ( cathedral), where they got to listen to some beautiful organ music); the other took the S-Bahn to the East Side Gallery, where those remains of the Berliner Mauer  (wall) are still standing that show the most famous graffiti on the western side of the wall. #5 1. Schultag in Leipzig

  The first day of school (for our kids) began with a German-style breakfast in the teacher cafeteria. Our hosts Frau Haschke, Frau Tümpel, and Principal Seffner welcomed us and laid out the plan for the next few days. Frau Legall handed Herr Seffner more South merch for his collection - the hat he's wearing in the pictures is a gift from 2018. Then our students and their partners went to their first classes before heading for lunch and one more group event: bowling! Why bowling even though it's not exactly a new cultural nor a typically German experience? Because the bowling alley is in the basement of the elementary school! After all, our partner school is  musikalisch-SPORTlich  for a reason. So, because from now on each student will make individual experiences rather than the group experiences of the past few days, they will share them in this blog. #16 The Grand Finale

  Hard to believe, but this will be our last blog entry from Leipzig. Without further ado, let’s hear how the kids spent their final day here: Sanjay writes: Today I finished out Prague by eating some Rindsgulasch , and it was so delicious. I also ate a kebab (not the Döner kind) and a popular Czech pastry called Tredlník . On our way back, we also found an old monastery that has been used for many centuries. It was really cool. On Friday, we had passed by a fortress on our drive, so we decided to stop there on our way back to Leipzig. Turns out, this fortress from the 19th century was repurposed as a prison during Nazi Germany. It was used to house prisoners and nearby is the Theresienstadt Ghetto . Many died in the prison from rampant disease or torture, and many were sent to concentration camps. Afterwards, we relaxed at home for my final night here.
